Our energy grids were not designed to handle two way power flows (renewables, etc.), nor were they setup to store energy (new batteries are in the pipeline). ln the coming days our grids will require new systems to cover both of these potentialities. This series of articles explores ways to incorporate “Virtual Power Plants” (demand response/capacity; frequency regulation; operational reserves; energy arbitrage and peak demand management) and “Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems”.
